I think it takes paperwork like that to truly legitimize these pistols. members with paperwork listing "X" prefix serial numbers. There were some pistols sold through the DCM to N.R.A. Normally, I don't even consider the purchase of these pistols unless there is official documentation. As Doran has already stated, many X-numbers have been applied illegally in an attempt to legitimize stolen property. While "X-numbered" pistols are a reality in the history of M1911s, it is impossible to validate one simply because it is marked that way. However, many more numbers were intentionally obliterated by those who illegally possessed a stolen pistol. Serial numbers were sometimes obliterated while a pistol was being refurbished, as some numbers were lightly struck to begin with. Foreign troops would have no reason to obliterate a serial number.

Most pistols that are legitimately marked with an "X" prefix serial number were simply stolen, rather than captured by foreign troops.
